Where, When & How

Alaska has many attributes and, besides its awesome natural beauty, is one of the places you can engage in ice fishing. While you may not be able to afford a trip to Alaska, there is plenty of ice fishing closer to home, probably in your own area, in places such as: Vermont, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Ohio, New York, Canada or the Thousand Islands region. Check your local online guides to determine the best area for ice fishing during the winter months.

If this is your first time ice fishing, you will need certain equipment to make this experience a memorable one. Let’s begin with the basics. An ice fishing shelter can be set up for two people. It is a mobile, self-contained aluminum frame that comes with a sled floor and an area inside which can be used for all your amenities. It has zippered doors on each end allowing you to get in and out of the shelter; has a canvas cover and is sturdy and warm enough, especially in frigid temperatures. It also has clear vinyl windows; and is stored flat so you can tow it to your destination. Priced from $190.00 and up, this is one shelter which is not only affordable, but is self-contained.

On the other end of the spectrum is an ice fishing house. This accommodates up to four people and is completely portable as well. In addition to the aluminum frame and sled floor, and similar to the above ice fishing shelter, it has an extra large ice area for your locater and heater; a wide size which allows ice fishing on both sides of the sled; extra head room; clear windows and is as quick and easy to set up as the shelter. The ice fishing houses start at $500.00, and depending upon the number in your party, you can be quite comfortable in this ice fishing house.

There are some ice fishing tips and ice fishing safety measures you are required to follow. For more information, check with your individual state’s Fish and Game Department regulations. Needless to say, however, one of the most important aspects in ensuring you have a fun and safe ice fishing experience is to: dress in layers; wear a hat, scarves, gloves, waterproof boots, and insulated clothing.

Before you attempt ice fishing, inquire as to the conditions of the ice; ensure you are not alone; bring a first aid kit as well as blankets; and follow the guidelines set forth by your State’s regulations. As the type of ice fishing equipment you will need; there are several online sites offering ice fishing rods; ice fishing tackle, and ice fishing lure. Depending upon where you go and what type of fish you are seeking, this will determine the rod, tackle and lure needed. You will also need an auger to cut into the ice; however, be careful - it is a very sharp tool and should be used with caution.

Ice fishing can be fun! As long as you obey the rules and regulations and follow our ice fishing tips, this is one sport you may grow to love.

It has become quite popular here in the states, but if you ever have the opportunity to visit Alaska, nothing can compare to the pristine
