Ice Fishing Shanty

There seems to be a debate on what is considered an ice fishing shanty. While some appear to look like RVs, others are mere tents. Let’s take a look at some ice fishing shanty styles available today.

One product listed as an ice fishing shanty is simply a flip-over designed tent. It has a built-in tackle and beverage holders; can be carried as a shoulder bag; absorbs the heat; has a heavy duty zipper; ample interior space designed for one; and fits into the truck of your car.

The second design is noted as a heavy duty poly ice shanty. With dimensions of 6.6’x7’x6.6’, the roof overhangs to 8.6 feet to give you a 2 foot shelf on the front of the shack. Its weight is 400 lbs. It is a one piece polyethylene with four pre-cut fishing holes. It is equipped with a 2 foot storage shelf and has a molded sled bottom. This shanty is big enough to house 6 people and store your gear as well. You can fit it on the back of your truck.

More unique to its name is a build-it-yourself shanty. Costing about $100 to build, this has all the makings of an ice fishing shanty. All the materials you need are listed with step by step instructions and illustrated diagrams and photos to help you build it.

There are no special tools required; can be constructed in three hours or less; weighs over 100 lbs.; dimensions are 4’x8’x6.5’ and is light enough for one person to lift it in and out of a vehicle or trailer. It accommodates two to three people.

While the conception of a shanty is somewhat skewered, it seems as if the latter design would be considered a true ice fishing shanty. Similar to an elongated igloo, this shanty is one you can build and have for years to come.
