Buying an Ice Fishing Shack
You can't beat ice fishing--the stillness of being out on a
frozen lake in a warm ice fishing shack one of the
most relaxing past-times you can have. But if you are new to ice
fishing, you may have no clue where to start when it comes to
choosing a functional ice fishing shack to keep you warm out on the
open lake.
With ice fishing shacks (as with most things in life) you get
what you pay for. With this in mind, you never want to purchase a
cheap ice fishing shack. Of course, you can occasionally find a
"cheapo" that seems like it would suffice for a trip or two out on
the ice, but in reality, cheap shelters are not likely to last
beyond a single fishing trip.
At the same time, you do not have to go out and buy an
expensive, high-tech ice fishing "house," when you have just taken
up ice-fishing. After all, you are not even sure if you will really
enjoy ice fishing yet, so this could be a huge waste of money. Some
newbies try to pitch a tent on the lake bed, but put this thought
out of your mind right away. The last thing you want is to crack
the ice and fall in!
To find an appropriate ice fishing shack, it is best to start by
searching online for shelters and begin to get an idea of what is
out there, and what you get for your money. Ice fishing shacks are
really like miniature houses, in that you can sell your shack if
you decide to upgrade. And by keeping the shack in good condition,
you can usually get a large part of your investment back when you
sell.
If you're new to ice fishing, a portable ice shelter will
probably be the best way to go. This makes it easy to transport
your shack to the lake and move from one location to the next as
you learn more about ice fishing and select better locations to
fish. And when the fishing season ends, it's easy for you to pack
up your shelter and take it home with you. Some portables can even
be collapsed to fit in the back of a car, but even the larger sizes
will fit in a truck.
Once you've been ice fishing a while, it tends to get under your
skin. At this point you are more than a casual hobbyist and you
should consider investing in a full-size ice fishing shack or
"cabin." These are the kinds you will see professionals using on
TV, and besides being larger, they often include a wide range of
comforts to improve your time on the ice.
Cabin shacks for ice fishing are perfect for larger groups and
for spending a weekend ice fishing out on the lake. Larger Ice
shack "cabins" can even come with extended sleeping areas, and make
a great winter retreat for fishing or just enjoying the outdoors in
comfort.
Ice fishing is something of an acquired taste. If you have never
tried it, it is recommended that you go along on a few trips and
"try it on" for yourself before investing in an ice fishing
shack of your own.
