Ice Fishing Safety

As a practical matter, ice fishing safety must be an overall consideration. To this end, here is ice fishing safety tips which you will need to ensure your experience is an enjoyable one.

Ice Fishing Safety

First Aid Kit: You can readily purchase an ice fishing first aid kit which includes: first aid guide; a steel needle; pair of scissors; adhesive bandages in three sizes; knuckle bandages; adhesive strips; gauze pads in two sizes; eye pad; alcohol pads; antiseptic pads; ammonia inhalants; moleskin and towels. This is a must have for any activity you engage in.

Ice Conditions: There should be four inches of clear, solid ice in the area you are ice fishing.

The Buddy System: Because you do not want to put too much pressure on the ice; you and your friend should not walk together, but at a safe distance.

Cell Phone: In case of emergency, a cell phone will enable you or your friend to call for immediate help.

Safety Wear: Always wear either a life jacket or vest which serves as a flotation device. If you or your friend falls into the water, hypothermia can become a life threatening factor.

Before you attempt any ice fishing, contact your local bait shop or state fishing license association to determine the conditions of the ice at the location you have chosen. Know as much about the area as possible. Also, never drive your car on ice. Do not drink or bring any alcoholic beverages to the site.

Safety issues, no matter what type of sport you engage in, are important. You must be prepared for any contingency. Therefore, take along everything you will need in case of an accident in or out of the water. While you may decide to go it alone; remember there is safety in numbers. Even if you take along a friend who doesn’t wish to ice fish; at least you will have someone available in case of an emergency. Be safe and have a great time!
